Becoming Unwritten is a digital video based piece that examines the clash of cultures on Turtle Island at the time of Indigenous/European contact.
The narrative of the story is based on a history text that starts in the Anishinabe language and slowly moves into the English language as the visuals on the screen move forward in chronological time through history.
Using stop-frame animation techniques and shot digital footage, the piece will work to document the process whereby Indigenous worldviews were undermined and decimated.

Anishinabe from Wasauksing First Nation, John Hupfield‘s chosen medium of expression is digital video. Engaged with his roots and heritage everyday, Hupfield uses video and digital art to learn how he is affected by the world around him, but even more importantly how he can affect the world. Continuing to create shorts since his first piece, Clear Cut in 2005, several of his shorts have screened at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto as well as numerous rural schools and communities in Ontario.
