A woman cleans her
kitchen fervently and then the stairs. You hear a number
of messages on her answering machine. They come from
her landlord who expresses the same anxieties over and
over again: worries about the dirtying of the washrooms
in the staircase by strangers or about the loss of keys
lent to the tenants.
In her very first film, “Schönen, guten Tag” (Hello
Ms. Schnitt) (1995), Corinna Schnitt already presents
the key to her practice. Her subjects are daily routine,
the rules and behavioral patterns of the nuclear family
and the social ideologies of perfection. Schnitt's films
are very carefully constructed, presenting a fascination
with precise composition. The particular relationship
between sound and image in her staged mini-scenarios
creates an often-ironic link between private and public
spheres and among narration and architecture.
