CyberPowWow

Natives Artists on the Net

A Nation to Nation project/event

Saturday and Sunday, April 5 & 6, 1997

A traditional pow wow is a two-day event where Native families and friends gather to eat, dance, discuss and listen to one another. People come from far and wide to be part of the event. CyberPowWow, organized by Nation to Nation, will also be a two-day event during which artists, activists and academics of (mainly but not exclusively) aboriginal ancestry log in from far and wide to take part in the launching of a brand new Web page dedicated to issues of contemporary Native art.

CyberPowWow will be an interactive, multimedia environment that includes works by artists and writers which comment and critique upon Native art, technology and community and the way these factors interact and intersect in our lives. People will also be able to talk to each other in real time through various conferencing software, thus rendering the event interactive, which is, after all, the whole point of a pow wow. Discussions will be based upon the artwork and essays and will be moderated.

You are invited to participate in CyberPowWow from the comfort of your own personal computer, or alternatively, from one of several locales across the country which will be set up for people who don't have the hardware, or perhaps the know-how to participate otherwise. These sites will be announced well in advance of the event. Stay tuned!

Nation to Nation is a collective of First Nations artists whose main goals are to create a forum for dialogue on issues of art, race and culture and to encourage a community in which we can support and learn from each other. To achieve these goals, we organize events, exhibitions, performances and workshops, bringing together Natives and non-Natives, artists and non-artists.
