Lecture by Monika Kin Gagnon and discussion between Monika Kin Gagnon and Janine Marchessault on Thursday, October 21, 1999 at 8:00 pm

PROGRAM:
Numerology of Fear, Janine Marchessault, 1998
On Cannibalism, Fatimah Tobing Rony, 1994

Staged as a video screening and discussion, this evening will explore the conjuncture of science, medicine and visual technologies across the woman’s body. Janine Marchessault’s Numerology of Fear, and Fatimah Tobing Rony’s On Cannibalism, both highlight the central role of the visual in the formation of medicine and anthropology. Through their use of experimental video, the artists mingle found images with original footage to create provocative interrogations of the disciplinary constraints of medical and anthropological truisms. For Marchessault, this includes an opportunity to interview the father of cinema, Georges Méliès; while Rony encounters the bride of King Kong.
