Sutapa Biswas Synapse
OBORO
Opening: Friday, September 10, 5 pm
The title of Sutapa Biswas' exhibition suggests a metaphor for the way we recall and reconstruct our past. Derived from a medical term that describes the region of contact between two neurons (...), the notion of “synapse” as used by Biswas refers to the link between the seemingly distinct spheres of body and mind - at least as Western philosophical tradition presents them to us. Transposed from its original context, the synapse here evokes the shifting, elusive zone through which memories and desires transit. Gilane Tawadros, Remembrance of things past and present.
In the video room, Sutapa Biswas will present an installation entitled Murmur (13 min, 1993). This work comprises two monitors: one shows the repeated movement of a paddle splitting the surface of the water, while the other records the various stages of a linear journey. Poetic and fleeting, strong in its visual and sonic blend, this work explores notions of displacement, territory, lineage and loss.
