Tower of Bowls

Linda Covit, détail de l’exposition Tower of Bowls, 2001.

Linda Covit is interested in how we co-exist with nature. Informed by her travels to Japan, she explores the balance between gardens and architecture, natural and built environments, in works that invite contemplation on the part of the viewer.

Covit offers two works with a common motif – the bowl. The timeless quality of this object transcends chronological and cultural boundaries, while its shape evokes daily existence as well as religious rituals, themes she has often expressed in her work. For 72 Bowls for Fuji, she made ceramic bowls which she then used as sculptural elements for interventions in snowy landscapes. Documenting these compositions, black and white photographs suggest a transient human presence. The second and new work, Tower of Bowls, continues in this direction but on a sculptural scale. Within a brushed aluminium structure, hundreds of small bowls, piled on top of each other, construct a tower. Large format photographs accompany the sculpture.
