Call for proposals

The next deadline : November 1st 2008
(Exhibition and Events Program, and Research and Production residencies Program)

OBORO welcomes original projects that promote critical thinking and artistic practices. We accept proposals from artists, artist collectives, independent curators and organisations who are looking to present exhibits, and events as well as to produce publications or do a residency.

The programming committee takes into account notions of artistic relevance and excellence, the Montreal context, equity and diversity as well as budgetary aspects. Before sending a proposal, please consult our web site attentively to get a better understanding of the activities we have programmed over the past years. In the case of projects involving considerable technical means, please contact us first in order to determine the availability of resources. OBORO pays artist's rights and fees in accordance with standards set by representative organizations and bodies responsible for collecting royalties.

Procedures for Submission

Please note that all material must be submitted in printed form and include the Submission Form. OBORO accepts proposals in French and English only. Proposals must be clearly typed, and those sent by e-mail or fax will not be accepted.

Also note that all supporting materials must be clearly identified and ready for viewing or listening. On a separate sheet of paper please include an index describing each image or file submitted on CD, DVD, or other format. Please limit the number of images to 20 and send only short excerpts that are significant and representative of your proposal. Computer files on CD or DVD must be clearly identified and easily accessed. For further information on the platforms, supports, and formats that we are equipped with, please consult the following support material submission guidelines.

Your proposal should include:

- Completed application form (Download Application Form, Compatible with Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 +)
- Brief letter of intent
- Project summary (100 words – please be specific)
- Detailed project description
- List of artworks, equipment, materials and other resources supplied by the artist or promoter
- List of technical requirements directly related to the presentation
- Budget
- Artist CV and of close collaborators
- Visual or audio material with detailed description of content. You can submit up to 20 images, 1 CD or DVD, 1 URL address
- Detailed index of all support materials
- Self-addressed, sufficiently stamped envelope if you wish to have your proposal returned to you by mail.


General Conditions

In the context of its exhibition and residency programs, OBORO pays artists the rights and royalties corresponding to the tables established by copyright societies.

Exhibitions

- Exhibition fee 2000 $ (solo exhibition)
- Web broadcast rights 50 $
- Budget for mounting/dismounting: up to 500 $
- A maximum amount of CDN$1000 to cover the artist’s travel fees(1)
- A maximum amount of CDN$1000 to cover transportation of the artworks or equipment(1)
- Housing costs for artists living outside Montréal
- A per diem of 40$
- Writing and sending out a bilingual press release (French and English)
- 30 hours of general assistance in mounting/dismounting
- 10 hours of specialized technical assistance for new media projects
- Organization of an opening
- Photographic documentation of the exhibition (the artist will receive a pack of slides.)
- Access to the following equipment free of charge(2):
• 2 CD/DVD players (ZONE 1)
• 2 S-VHS players (NTSC)
• 2 LCD multimedia projectors (1200 ANSI lumens)
• 1 CRT monitor (cathode tube) SONY KV-32V15 (32 pouces, NTSC)
• 1 CRT monitor (cathode tube) SONY KV-20FV10 (20 inches, NTSC, flat screen)
• 2 CRT monitor (cathode tube) SANYO DS13204 (14 inches, NTSC)
• 2 audio amplifiers (5.1 and 6.1)
• 6 small audio speakers (Dynaudio 65W) with wall mounts
• 2 sets of headphones with pre-amp and extensions
• 1 computer (Mac or PC according to needs)
• High Speed internet access (800 kbps up, 5 Mbps down)

(1) Projects for which travel fees and transportation of the works exceed CDN$1000 each will need to secure external supplementary funding before they can become eligible to the program. 

(2) Artists requiring supplementary equipment for the presentation of their exhibition will receive a 50 % discount on the current costs of any equipment access should they wish to use the resources available at the New Media Lab

Residence and Production Projects

In the context of its research and production residency program, OBORO provides basic technical support (orientation and general guidance). Please be advised that the honoraria for specialized technical assistance (programming, sound engineering, video editing, etc.) are to be paid in full by the artist.

- 500 $ honorarium (less than 15 days) or 1000 $ (longer than 15 days)
- Web broadcast rights 50 $ if applicable
- Housing costs for artists living outside Montréal
- A per diem of 40$
- A maximum amount of CDN$1000 to cover the artist’s travel fees(1)
- A maximum amount of CDN$1000 to cover transportation of the artworks or equipment(1)
- Writing and sending out a bilingual press release (French and English)

These guidelines will assist you in choosing the appropriate support material for your application to OBORO:
General Considerations:
Please note that OBORO's programming committee has a limited amount of time to review each submission. Prepare and cue your materials in consideration that there will be a maximum of 15 minutes allotted to reviewing your support material.
Make sure that you send material that complies with the accepted formats and that is compatible with the equipment listed below.
If your material requires plug-ins or special software that is not listed below, you should include the plug-ins or software in your support material.
All text files should be converted to text (.txt) or rich text (.rtf) format. Project descriptions and résumés should be printed and sent on 8 1/2" x 11" paper.
Accepted formats for support material:
35 mm slides or prints (maximum 20)
and/or a maximum of 2 of the following:
Compact Disc (audio CD)
CD ROM
DVD ROM
DVD (NTSC, "Region 1: U.S., Canada" or "Region 8: All Regions")
