In 1996, Æ was initiated as a research and communication unit based in an artistic and philosophical exchange between artists Gisèle Trudel and Stéphane Claude (who have worked creatively together for the past 8 years), with the regular participation of other collaborators. Through a more anonymous framework, Æ consolidates their interest for an ecological awareness in the use of technology, as echoed in the arts, science and shamanic traditions.
En 1996, Æ a été initiée comme unité de recherche et de communication à partir d’un échange artistique et philosophique entre les artistes Gisèle Trudel et Stéphane Claude (qui collaborent à des projets de création depuis huit ans), avec la participation régulière d’autres collaborateurs. Sous une forme plus anonyme, Æ cristallise leur intérêt pour la conscience écologique et technologique ayant un enracinement dans les arts, les sciences et les traditions chamanistes.
		Stéphane Claude is an electroacoustic sound and video artist. Screenings shown internationally. Since 1992, he has been preoccupied with the presentation of electronic art, by favoring the notion of 'active listening.' Since 1993, he has conceived immersive environments as the technical director for Le Festival international du nouveau cinéma et nouveaux médias (1997, 1998), La 3e Fenêtre (1995), and Champ Libre (1993, 1995). He is presently audio coordinator at PRIM. Gisèle Trudel received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1984 and is an independent director since 1985. She works as a freelance video editor and digital compositing artist, and presently acts as New media coordinator at TechnOboro. Presentations, artist talks, exhibitions and screenings shown internationally. Both artists live and work in Montréal. Special collaborator Florian Wüst (born 1970 in Munich, Germany) graduated at the Braunschweig School of Arts in 1998 and is presently joining a Masters Course of Fine Arts at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam. He is working as an artist, filmmaker and curator for film and video art. Recent curatorial projects include 'expanded media', a series about artistic positions within New Media at the Braunschweig School of Arts (1998) and 'ideal - a videolibrary by Karin Frei and Florian Wüst' (1999) which was located on a ferryboat cruising the Lake of Lucerne, Switzerland.   Stéphane Claude est vidéaste et artiste électroacoustique, ses œuvres ont été montrées à travers le monde. Depuis 1992, il s’intéresse à la présentation d’un art électronique qui favorise la notion d’”écoute active”. Depuis 1993, il a conçu des environnements d’immersion à titre de directeur technique du Festival international du nouveau cinéma et des nouveaux médias (1997, 1998), de La 3e Fenêtre (1995) et de Champ Libre (1993, 1995). Il est présentement coordonnateur audio chez PRIM. Gisèle Trudel est bachelière en beaux-arts depuis 1984 et vidéaste indépendante depuis 1985. Monteur vidéo pigiste et artiste du numérique, elle travaille aussi comme coordonnatrice des nouveaux médias à TechnOboro. Son travail a fait l’objet de présentations, conférences d’artiste, expositions et projections sur la scène internationale. Les deux artistes vivent et travaillent à Montréal. Collaborateur spécial Florian Wüst (né en 1970 à Munich, en Allemagne) a terminé son baccalauréat à l’École des beaux-arts de Braunschweig en 1998 et est présentement inscrit à une maîtrise en beaux-arts, à l’Académie Willem de Kooning à Rotterdam. Il travaille comme artiste, cinéaste et commissaire en art vidéo et filmique. Parmi ses récents projets à titre de commissaire, la série “Expanded Media” examinait les différentes positions artistiques à l’intérieur de l’École des beaux-arts de Braunschweig (1998), alors que “Ideal – A Videolibrary by Karin Frei and Florian Wüst” (1999) était présentée à bord d’un traversier sur le lac de Lucerne en Suisse.   aelab@videotron.ca fwuest@compuserve.com
