Presented as part of Festival Accès Asie
For 7 Moments, we feature African dance, a first for the Festival Accès Asie celebrating its 10 anniversary next May. Zab Maboungou from Montreal’s Nyata Nyata Dance will dance, improvise and explore online with William Lau from Toronto’s Little Pear Garden Collective, a Chinese performing arts company that features Peking Opera. Cohorts for many years, these two reputable artists and artistic directors are highly regarded on the national and international arts scene. Conversations on the similarities between the two seemingly distinct traditions are the inspiration behind this project. – Janet Lumb

Establishing her roots in Montréal in 1984, Janet’s passion to form Accès Asie, now in its 10th year, was in response to a need for a stronger Asian presence in Québec. The cultivation of national and local links with culturally diverse arts organisations has resulted this year in this exploration between Chinese and African traditions. Janet’s inspiration to push the limits and boundaries has brought many chaotic as well as magical moments.
A pioneer of African dance in Canada, Zab Maboungou has been performing in Africa, Europe, Asia and America for the past twenty years. Deeply infused with a knowledge of tradition, her art expands contemporaneity in dance. Her choreographies, which she calls “poetics,” explore movement and gesture rooted in time, emphasizing codified spaces of the intimate while revealing a dimension that is universal.
Originating in Hong Kong, William Lau grew up in Montréal and studied both Chinese traditional dance and Western classical ballet. With a graduate degree in dance at York University and as a disciple of the Masters Song Chang Rong, he specializes in ambitious female roles from Peking Opera. During the last twenty years, William Lau has widened the horizon of traditional dance while collaborating with artists from various cultural backgrounds.
