Artist-in-Residence Presentation : The Collector

The format of this presentation is a hybrid work-in-progress performance and artist talk. Barrow will be workshopping his recent manual animation/digital puppetry – amalgamating new and antiquated technologies. Barrow will combine an emulated late 1980s AMIGA animation software with Zoom to present his most recent manual animations at OBORO.

Barrow has for years endeavoured to forge artistic exchanges with the viewer, striving in their performance work to discover new ways to further implicate and engage a viewer in a narrative gesture. In an effort to engage purposefully with a live audience in these unprecedented times, Barrow is soliciting viewers with iPhones to participate in a 10-minute text/exchange using iMessage’s Sketch function to inform the content of this presentation.

Over the last fifteen years, Daniel Barrow has used simple (often antiquated) technologies to present pictorial narratives by merging the methods of cinema, comics, animation, and magic lantern shows. Barrow is best known for adapting comic book narratives to “manual” forms of animation by manipulating drawings on an overhead projector.
