Publication Launch: Indian Princesses and Cowgirls: Stereotypes from the frontier
Co-authors Gail Guthrie Valaskakis and Marilyn Burgess share their personal collections of historical and contemporary images of Indian princesses and cowgirls culled from the living archive of North American popular culture. Adding a wry commentary on this imagery and folklore is artist Rebecca Belmore's bookwork, created especially for the project. Together, the essays and bookwork take an original, feminist and Native view at how race and gender are produced in the pop culture of the frontier.
