My-Van DamMoving with the Unknown
Moving with the Unknown is an immersive video installation project that builds on My-Van Dam's recent research, particularly her works Connecting from the Inside Out (2024) and Espaces de résonance (2025), through which she explored the relationships between embodied memory, somatic practices, and spaces of collective care.
Through this residency, the artist will continue her investigation of voice, movement, and breath as tools for presence, listening, and connection. Considering the body as a living archive shaped by multiple memories and temporalities, she is interested in how traumatic experiences become inscribed in the body and influence our relationship to ourselves and to others.
Conceived as a space for experimentation, the residency will provide an opportunity to develop a visual, sonic, and performative language through a series of explorations involving image, sound, and spatialization. These investigations will serve as the foundation for the creation of Moving with the Unknown.
My-Van Dam is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal. She holds a degree in Visual and Media Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and develops a practice that brings together installation, performance, image, sculpture, and drawing. Her research focuses on the transmission of intergenerational trauma, embodied memory, and processes of collective repair. Her work has been presented at the Musée de Rimouski (2025), the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2022), MAADI (2022), the Rad Hourani Foundation (2021), Place des Arts (2021), Projet Casa (2022), Festival Art Souterrain (2022), and La Centrale galerie Powerhouse (2024). More recently, she has presented solo exhibitions at the PHI Foundation (2025), Montréal, arts interculturels (MAI) (2024), and Centre Diagonale (2026). She has been the recipient of residencies at SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art (2023) and Pocoapoco (2026). Her work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
