Technological miniaturization has transformed the experiences of sound, music and the context of receiving works. Mobility is increased but there is also isolation linked to a private listening reality. On a daily basis, we have moved from spaces dedicated to active listening (sound systems installed in collective listening spaces) to small individual listening systems, such as podcast, headphones, earbuds, and portable computers.

There is, however, a very physical dimension of sound that goes beyond the zone of personal intimacy. The presence of sound in space generates different sensations, by crossing the collective experiences in performance spaces, concerts, theatres, gallery installations, liminal and industrial spaces and in contexts of electronic art festivals. This exploratory dimension of sound in space, in time and through the body, is at the heart of this workshop. It aims to develop all aspects of sound in a scenographic context. Here is an overview of the topics covered:

- Basic tools and methods for sound reinforcement. Microphones, console, external processors, amplification and speakers.
- Calibration techniques of audio systems. Create a listening reference in environments with multiple amplification vocations.
- Experience in digital-computer creation and analog-material practice in sound.
- Spatialization techniques and immersive sound. Multichannel installation.
- Integration of acoustic phenomena and sculptural elements to support and embody the meaning of audio works.
- Experimental speakers, actuators-shakers, speakers hidden in objects and acoustic volumes
- Acoustic treatment to develop intelligibility zones vs using the characteristics of reverberant spaces.
- Sound design work in studio and in situ, methods and tools.
- Audio control work, live sound event lists playback systems.

The workshop will include a sound session by participants in a professional performance space in Montreal.

May 17, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 18-19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 24, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., May 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

> The workshop will be offered in French, both instructors are bilingual and can answer questions in English.

Prerequisites
- Be a professional artist, creator or cultural worker;
- Having a work experience with live sound is an asset;
- Be a self-employed worker or a salaried employee*
- Attend every workshop session.
* Up to 2 spots are available for salaried employees of organisations whose salary mass is over 2 million $ and are subject to Quebec's 1% Law for Workforce training. These participants must pay the unsubsidized cost of the training offered. Please contact us for more details.

Reservation / Payment
Reservations can be done by phone or email. Full payment must be made for reservations to be valid. You can pay by credit card (Visa or MasterCard), cheque or in cash. Registration to a workshop is not transferable.

Cancellation / Refund
OBORO does not refund registration fees except in case of illness (with a medical note) or of absolute necessity. In such cases, registration fees are transferable to another workshop or service offered by the New Media Lab.

Workshop Cancellation
OBORO reserves the right to cancel workshops at any time and without advance notice. In this case, registration fees are completely refunded.

Frédéric Auger

Frédéric Auger is a sound designer and sound engineer. He is interested in creating living sound matter, interpreted live. In recent years, his activities have focused on the integration of sound environments into performative context, using sampling, reproduction, dynamic processing as well as the possibilities of direct spatialization of objects/sound bodies, in search of a practice which can be integrated organically into the creative and experimental process of artists with whom he associates. 

Stéphane Claude

Stéphane Claude is an electronic_acoustic composer and sound engineer. His research is based on integrating a conceptual and physiological framework of audio recording and sound installation for different diffusion contexts in the electronic arts.
