Publication HOUSE / BOAT

HOUSE / BOAT is a multimedia installation created following an artist residency that brought New Delhi-based artist Vivan Sundaram to OBORO from September 7 to 23. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Bryan Mulvihill and OPERA, as part of a series of exchanges between India and Canada.

"Two large sculptures: a house and a boat evoke forms of protection that can also be seen as containers that have been opened and assaulted. They signify departure and return to familiar spaces, where we can relocate and re-examine our relationship with the world… HOUSE / BOAT are independent yet associated entities. They are paintings (the persistence of image and brand inscription), but they extend their borders to another surface to create a three-dimensional object. The sculpture is perceived as an object while inviting the viewer to enter and inhabit its interior; no mystery or illusion of the negative, only a dismantling of the imposing scale to welcome the body, mind and eye of the engaged participant."
