François Quévillon Opening: La Terre en suspens
François Quévillon, Esker / lithium, 2019 – en cours.
Join us for the opening of François Quévillon's exhibition La Terre en suspens, which will be on display in OBORO's two exhibition spaces, on Saturday, April 15, 2023, starting at 5:00 pm. Also, the launch of the publication Eidolons, a complete overview of the exhibition of the same name that took place at OBORO in November and December 2022 by artist Lorraine Simms, as well as the New Media Lab Open House, with artist-in-residence Helena Martin-Franco sharing her project An Elephant in the Room with the public. An evening not to be missed.
La Terre en suspens is inspired by geology in order to probe the space-time and materiality of the digital. Mainly composed of digitized rock formations and fragments of territories altered by algorithms, the works echo the implications and effects of certain technologies on perception, while offering new perspectives on the evolution of the Earth, its substance and the processes that impact it, such as erosion, volcanism, as well as the extraction and transformation of minerals in a context marked by globalization and climate change.
Richly illustrated, Eidolons, the 60-page bilingual publication includes images of individual drawings, installation shots of the exhibition and three texts. Catherine Barnabé explores the “ghostly absence” of the animals represented. James Sutherland-Smith’s ekphrastic poem conjures the precarious existence of these once living animals, and Lorraine Simms considers the ways in which her process invokes “immateriality and impermanence”. Together drawings and texts offer poignant reminders of key environmental issues such as habitat loss and the extinction of animal species.
During her residency, An Elephant in the Room, Helena Martin-Franco will focus on the creation of a series of short video performances and on the development of new representations of her character the elephant woman from her on-camera incarnation. The elephant woman is inspired by the Spanish expression “tener el moco en el suelo,” which literally translates as “having your trunk on the floor”.
